A silent message is a post delivered without a notification sound, controlled by the Bot API's "disable notification" option. It still appears in the channel but does not buzz subscribers' devices, which is useful for low-priority or off-hours posts. Sending silently removes the sound and vibration at the moment of delivery, nothing more. The post still lands in the channel, still raises the unread badge, and still reaches every subscriber exactly as a normal post does. Reach is unchanged; only the interruption is. Subscribers who muted the channel themselves were never going to hear it either way.
Every audible post draws down a finite tolerance. Channels that buzz for filler, corrections, and a third post of the day train subscribers to mute them, after which nothing gets through at all. The workable discipline is to reserve sound for posts worth opening immediately and send the rest quietly, and to treat overnight hours in the audience’s timezone as silent by default.
Pinning is a separate action with its own alert, and it can be sent quietly in exactly the same way. This catches people out when they re-pin an older announcement to bring it back to the top: the post is old, but the pin notification is new and reaches everyone. Deciding the pin’s loudness is a distinct choice from deciding the post’s.
