Channel username

A channel username is the public @handle a Telegram channel owner can set, which gives the channel a shareable t.me/username link and lets people find it inside Telegram's own search. A channel without a username is private: it has no public link and no search visibility, so the only way in is an invite link the administrator shares directly. Autogram connects to a channel through its administrator relationship regardless of which kind it is, but the username decides whether the channel can also be discovered and linked to from marketing pages, a bio, or search — which matters for any channel trying to grow beyond the audience an operator invites by hand.

Public vs private, not free vs paid

Setting a username is a property of the channel, available regardless of size, and it is reversible — a channel can go from private to public or back by adding or removing the handle in its settings. The choice is about discoverability, not access control on its own: a public channel can still moderate who reads it through other means, and a private one can still grow through invite links passed hand to hand or embedded on a website.

Why the handle matters for automation

A stable, memorable username is what turns a channel into a destination that other content can point back to — a link in a blog post, a mention on another channel — without depending on an invite link that can be revoked or regenerated. An automated posting schedule benefits from the same stability: content built around 'follow us at @channel' stays correct as long as the handle does not change, while content built around an invite link breaks the moment that link is rotated.

One handle, one namespace

Telegram usernames are unique across the whole platform, shared between channels, groups, bots, and personal accounts, so a desired handle can already be taken by an unrelated account. Picking one early and keeping it is cheaper than changing it later: every external link, printed material, or cross-post that names the old handle stops resolving the moment the new one takes over.
